In case you not know, all new iPage customers are eligible for a free domain name upon signups. The registration for this domain will be free of charge as long as you are hosting with iPage. Yup, no registration nor renewal fees for the domain name for life!
Sounds great? You bet! But wait, there’s a catch behind this free deal. A check on iPage’s User Agreement
2. Term; Termination; Cancellation Policy.
b) This Agreement may be terminated or cancelled;
If an account with a thirty (30) day money-back guarantee is purchased and cancelled within thirty (30) days of sign-up, the User will, upon request, receive a full refund of all hosting fees. Requests for these refunds should be made through our Support Team. Refunds made for a thirty (30) day money-back guarantee will not include domain registration fees or setup fees, nor will they include any fees for additional services that are purchased in the first thirty (30) days. If your plan includes a free domain name and You cancel within the first 30 days, a fee for the domain will be deducted from your refund. If you do not wish to keep the domain name, iPage will take possession of the domain and the fee will not be charged.
In other words, if you select the free domain option when you order iPage and cancel your account within the first 30 days, you will still be charged on domain registration fee.
As this clause is a big turn down for those who are aiming for free domain, it is not mention in most iPage hosting review sites. However, iPage does state this clearly in their Term of Service, and I think this policy is absolutely fair to the users.
Bear in mind that domain registration is not actually free (iPage, as a domain registrant, need to pay VeriSign) and the process cannot be undone – when you cancel your iPage account (this means you are not a customer anymore), there’s no reason for iPage to pay your domain fee!
So hey, think twice before you sign up iPage with the free domain option. It’s not that iPage is not good enough; but for self-protection, it’s always advised to register your domain with a third party. To learn more, visit homepage for more iPage review.
